Japan is located on the Ring of Fire, a belt of fault lines that is prone to earthquakes and tsunamis. On average, Japan experiences about 1,500 felt earthquakes a year, and these events sometimes lead to major tragedies, such as the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, which was followed by a tsunami as high as 40 meters, killing more than 18,000 people, including many school children who were unable to escape in time.
